Personalised IT Solutions for Healthcare
The company specialises in developing personalised medical tools. They provide accurate knowledge about the human body, from the risks of developing severe diseases to the peculiarities of sports metabolism and microbiota composition in order to generate individual recommendations on physical activity and nutrition.
Colobridge products and services used:
Background
IT infrastructure plays a key role in a company that offers digital products to its customers.
The laboratory collects the client’s biomaterial, examines his or her DNA, and decodes the data. This makes it possible to learn about genetic predispositions to diseases, sport injuries, and intolerance to certain food groups.
The microbiota test helps the company experts to make accurate nutritional recommendations to the client.
The whole genome test helps to obtain extensive information about individual drug metabolism and the risk of developing hereditary cancer.
Problem
The company collects and stores confidential information about customers on a digital platform. This imposes certain limitations on using many traditional cloud products. The data used to be placed in a geographically distributed infrastructure based on a popular cloud provider in Europe. However, it is difficult to obtain the desired level of security in the cloud under HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act), and the former service provider was unable to find GPUs to match the performance and cost that the client required.

However, it is difficult to obtain the desired level of security in the cloud under HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act), and the former service provider was unable to find GPUs to match the performance and cost that the client required.
Tasks

The IT department of a biomedical company was pursuing the following goals:

stop using cloud infrastructure in the public cloud and place its hardware in a reliable European data centre operating at Tier III and above which guarantees the security of IT infrastructure, storing and processing client medical data, provides SLAs with financial guarantees on its part and technical support 24/7/365;

provide a certain GPU computing power and fulfil several other technical conditions that could not be implemented in the public cloud;

find a GPU that was quite rare at the time while avoiding overpayments and logistical and customs clearance issues when delivering it to the installation site;

arrange IT infrastructure migration in such a way that the requirements for acceptable downtime of critical services are met.

Implementation

After examining several service providers, Colobridge was selected. It provided a technology platform for the biomedical company’s IT infrastructure in the German jurisdiction, where GDPR requirements are strictly enforced and equipment is located in two certified data centres that are among the top 3 in Europe (reliability level corresponds to Tier III/Tier III+). The provider ensured that the client has remote access to the hardware and guaranteed that technical support would respond quickly as per the SLA (the average response time to a request is up to 15 minutes). It is important that Colobridge platform can be used to deploy IT solutions of any complexity — not only to deploy servers and other hardware but also to connect as-a-service modalities, combining them in any desired way.

While implementing the task, Colobridge staff:

  • purchased the required hardware in Europe, thereby preventing the client from making unreasonable overpayments and dealing with logistics and customs clearance issues. At that time, there was a shortage of GPUs in the IT hardware market, however, the provider’s long-standing partnerships with many vendors and suppliers made it possible to quickly deliver the selected GPU model. The servers purchased were equipped with GeForce RTX 2080 Ti GPUs, a high-performance graphics card based on the Turing architecture that supports the latest NVIDIA technologies. This graphics card was chosen as the best fit given the specifics of the computations required for DNA decoding and other research conducted in the client’s laboratories.
  • provided the support required to plan the migration and helped determine the best possible time for migration — at night, when customer services are least loaded. This made it possible to accomplish the work required with minimal downtime for critical applications.
  • successfully deployed the hardware of a biomedical company in a European data centre and provided its technicians with remote access to the console.
  • provided all the necessary support in migrating and transferring data from the infrastructure hosted with a cloud provider that the company had been using before to the new GeForce RTX 2080 Ti GPU servers. The migration went quickly and smoothly thanks to Colobridge support staff who are available around the clock.
Results
We have been placing our equipment in Colobridge data centres in Germany for several years now, and we have not had a single massive disruption over this time. The maintenance is carried out in line with the schedule and at a time strictly agreed with us. I would also like to thank the company managers and support staff who always respond quickly to our requests. If we had to solve a similar problem today, we would definitely approach Colobridge again.
