Advantages of Block Storage

Easy scaling

You can scale your block storage at any time to the required size by easily adding new volumes to your IT infrastructure or expanding existing ones. Storage capacity will always match your actual disk space needs.

Centralized data storage management

We build a Storage Area Network (SAN) — a cluster with a single centralized fault-tolerant storage device. This approach simplifies and accelerates data access while improving collaboration among employees across different offices and departments.

Block Storage by Colobridge: Benefits

Fast data access

The high-speed SAN network combined with metadata assigned to each block significantly reduces read and write operation times. This is critical for high-performance, latency-sensitive business applications — especially those with frequently updated files.

Optimized storage costs

You avoid large capital expenditures on storage hardware and do not need to hire in-house specialists with the relevant expertise. We ensure stable operation of the storage system and — upon request — can also handle its administration.

Data security and reliability

External drives and on-premises storage systems are vulnerable to theft, fire, or other physical incidents that can lead to total data loss. Colobridge Block Storage eliminates these risks by providing fault-tolerant storage backed by financial guarantees.

Compatibility with any other products

You receive Block Storage when renting cloud infrastructure (IaaS) or a cloud backup repository (BaaS/DRaaS). You can also combine it with any other physical or cloud products on the Colobridge platform to achieve maximum performance and flexibility.

Smooth data migration

We migrate your data to Colobridge Block Storage in the shortest possible time. We schedule the transfer during periods of minimal load on your business applications, ensuring near-zero downtime for your IT infrastructure. Our support team is available 24/7/365.

Reliability Confirmed by Certificates

International information security standard ISO 27001
Process quality, data protection, and business continuity 24/7
European standard for quality and service control
Guaranteed protection of financial and payment data

Block Storage — FAQs

What is block storage at Colobridge?

Block Storage is an enterprise-grade storage system with no single point of failure. It aggregates multiple physical drives, on top of which virtual disks are created. We rent these virtual disks to different clients, with pricing based on volume and the desired access speed. Clients receive a high-performance, fault-tolerant virtual disk that can be simultaneously attached to multiple servers, enabling the creation of clusters based on shared storage.
On the Colobridge platform, you can select the type of block storage that best fits your needs:

  • fast access (based on SSD/NVMe drives),
  • slower access (based on traditional HDDs),
  • or specially optimized for corporate backup storage.

The service is provided on an “as a Service” (aaS, as a Servise) model and includes access ports to the SAN network.

How does block storage differ from other cloud storage methods?

In block storage (also known as block-level storage), data is divided into fixed-size blocks. An external operating system manages these blocks, allowing users to access the data as if it were separate physical disks. This provides greater flexibility for storing various data types: individual files, databases, virtual machine volumes, and more.
By contrast:

  • File storage organizes data into files and folders with a hierarchical structure (as in NAS systems).
  • Object storage keeps data in isolated containers with no hierarchy or file system, using a flat address space where each object has a unique identifier.

Why is block storage better than traditional hard drives?

Block storage easily adapts to growing business needs — its capacity can be expanded virtually unlimited times, quickly and efficiently, as your data volume increases. It supports backup creation, and its low I/O latency makes it ideal for storing databases of any type.

What are the use cases for block storage?

Block storage delivers high performance and fast access speeds, making it the ideal choice for:

  • virtualization systems
  • boot disks
  • latency-sensitive applications
  • mail servers
  • transaction processing

It is also the preferred solution for corporate databases and for scenarios where future data volume is unpredictable — when space runs out, you can quickly scale storage to the required size.

What should you consider when choosing a cloud storage system?

The final decision depends on several factors:

  • desired read/write speed
  • throughput
  • supported access protocols
  • access control requirements
  • cost
  • scaling flexibility

The selection process is highly individual and depends on many additional conditions. To confirm whether block storage is the right fit for you, feel free to contact our specialists for a detailed consultation.

How is fault tolerance and data security ensured in Block Storage?

Colobridge Block Storage has no single point of failure — failure of any individual component does not cause loss of access to your data. All data resides on a fault-tolerant platform deployed across two independent, certified Tier III / Tier III+ data centers in Frankfurt am Main.
As a service provider, we guarantee both the physical and legal protection of your data in accordance with German law. All our employees sign and strictly adhere to non-disclosure agreements (NDA). This level of protection applies to all other Colobridge products as well.

What is the approximate cost of block storage?

The price depends on the volume of stored data and the amount of redundant capacity required to accommodate sudden short-term increases in data volume.

How is access to block storage organized?

To connect a server to the block storage system, you need to install an FC HBA adapter on the server and connect it to the SAN network on the Colobridge platform.
When using the iSCSI protocol, a standard free 1 Gbit/s Ethernet port is sufficient. We recommend this option for slower-access storage used for archives and backups.
